Netflix acquires comic book publisher Millarworld

Netflix has announced that they’ve acquired Millarworld, the comic book publisher founded by Mark Millar.

Millar is the creator of such characters and comics as Kick-Ass, Kingsman and Old Man Logan. The deal will help bring Millar’s characters to life through films, TV series and kids’ shows and make them available exclusively to Netflix members worldwide.

Millarworld will continue to create and publish new stories and character franchises under the Netflix brand. This deal also marks Netflix’s first acquisition.

“As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “We can’t wait to harness the creative power of Millarworld to Netflix and start a new era in global storytelling.”

Millarworld is run by Millar and his wife Lucy and they have helped co-create eighteen published character worlds, three of them, Wanted, Kick-Ass and Kingsman have been adapted to the big screen and together have grossed almost $1 billion at the global box office.

However, the deal does not include the rights to Kick-Ass, Kingsman as those have already been adapted to the big screen.

“This is only the third time in history a major comic book company has been purchased at this level,” said Millar. “I’m so in love with what Netflix is doing and excited by their plans. Netflix is the future and Millarworld couldn’t have a better home.”

Millar himself has become one of the most recognizable names in the graphic novel and comics world. During his eight years at Marvel, he created comic books and stories that would inspire the first Avengers film, Captain America: Civil War and Logan.

“Mark has created a next-generation comics universe, full of indelible characters living in situations people around the world can identify easily with,” added Sarandos. “We look forward to creating new Netflix Originals from several existing franchises as well as new super-hero, anti-hero, fantasy, sci-fi and horror stories Mark and his team will continue to create and publish.”

Netflix hasn’t disclosed how much they paid to acquire Millarworld.

  1. A tip I got on Netflix that thecanadiantechie.blogspot.com users might want to know

    Hi ,
I saw you mentioned Netflix on your page here thecanadiantechie.blogspot.com/2017/08/netflix-acquires-comic-book-publisher.html
I'm not sure you are aware, but for users outside the US, almost 90% of the movie and tv shows catalog is blocked.
I was traveling outside the US and it was a real nightmare to watch my favorite shows, but I found a cool workaround. So, when I saw you mentioned Netflix, I thought other users of your site might be interested as well if you mention it to them.
There are a few solutions, they are all listed here very clearly
    media.netflix.com/en/press-releases/netflix-acquires-millarworld-1
I personally use a VPN, but I guess you can just share this article with your users and let them pick the solution that works for them.
I hope I returned the favor,
    Best,
    Kaylee
