Google announces ARCore, their answer to Apple’s ARKit

Google has announced a new SDK called ARCore to help bring augmented reality to millions of devices, just like Apple is planning to do with their ARKit in iOS 11. Think of ARCore as a condensed version of Google Tango and will put the capabilities of Tango but in the hands of the everyday smartphone owner. Both the Android and VR teams at Google are working on ARCore and the new SDK works with Java, OpenGL, Unity and Unreal. ARCore is based on three pillars: motion tracking, environmental understanding and light estimation. The SDK will be able to position and orient items, detect horizontal surfaces and observe ambient light.Unlike Tango, ARCore can’t detect depth because most phones don’t have the sensors to emit IR signals. ARCore will also use Visual Positioning Service (VPS) to help enable, “world scale AR experiences well beyond a tabletop.” Essentially, it will be able to detect your position indoors and enable your phone to recognize your relative position to a room.Just hangin&…

Samsung’s Note line has been all about catering towards the power users, with a powerful processor, more RAM than necessary and some experimentation (like making the screen curved) mixed in-between.This year, with the Note8, Samsung has made the device more in-line with the Galaxy S8 & S8+. In fact, the Note8 looks and feels very similar to the latest entry in the Galaxy S lineup. The Note8 has the same metal and glass design as the S8 and even the fingerprint sensor is located on the back. As said in my S8 review, I was never a big fan of where the fingerprint sensor was situated on the back, it was just awkward to use.The Galaxy Note8 is being powered by the Snapdragon 835 (same as the S8) with 6GB of RAM. There’s 64GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, the screen is a 6.3-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity Display, which is only 0.1 inches bigger than the screen on the S8+. Bixby is also on the Note8 with its own dedicated button like on the S8.Because of that slight…
