Roku has released the results of a survey they conducted about how their users get their streaming recommendations.
This survey was conducted ahead of Streaming Day, which takes place on May 20th. Now, onto the results, more people trust their friends that their partners or significant others for movie and TV recommendations. About 54% of Canadians look to friends for recommendations, while 17% trust their partners or significant others.
And when it comes to recommendations for TV shows and movies, 65% of Canadians will look to someone with a similar sense of humour as them while 26% will look to someone with the same political and economic views, 15% from the same town as them and 12% of the same gender.
About 52% of respondents of the survey said that commercial influence what they watch. While 50% are influenced by the cast of a movie or TV show, then 35% by Facebook posts and 34% are influenced by online new stories.
TV shows are more commonly recommended than travel tips, as people are twice as likely to share TV recommendations (about 27%) and movies (24%) than restaurants (14%) or travel (12%).
Around 41% of Canadians said that they prefer to watch a movie or TV show along, as a more valuable “me time”. Some other reasons why people prefer to watch alone is to focus on the TV show or movie (24%), the TV show or movie is a guilty pleasure (10%) or 3% of them said the content is often inappropriate for kids.
Millennials are the ones who are most likely to want to watch a TV show or movie alone. About 53% of people aged 18-34 watch alone, 35% of those aged 35-54 and 33% of those aged 55 and over prefer some alone time.
In terms of what ranks #1 for favourite TV quote, “How You Doin?” from Friends ranks #1, while “No Soup for You!” from Seinfeld and “D’Oh!” from The Simpsons rank second and third respectively.
As for movie quotes, “May the Force be with you” from Star Wars ranks #1, followed by “Go ahead, make my day” from Sudden Impact then “You talking to me?” from Taxi Driver.
So far, Roku users around the world have streamed over three billion hours of videos and music in the first quarter of 2017 alone.
“Consumers globally seem to be viewing more content than ever before,” said Abby Reyes, streaming expert at Roku. “Before the advent of streaming, viewing decisions were limited more by scheduling, locality and familiarity. Now, we trade recommendations with a vastly wider circle to help us find what to watch. Although we love our spouses, we’re not always in love with what they want to watch. Instead, we may look to those who have a similar sense of humour to help us choose our next movie or TV show.”
