Today’s F8 keynote was focused more on AI, connectivity and a bit more VR and AR stuff.

Facebook is making a big push for artificial intelligence, partly because it’s a powerful tool. During today’s keynote, Facebook’s Applied Machine Learning Director Joaquin Quiñonero Candela explained how AI has changed how computers process and understand images and videos.
Computers can now understand every single individual pixel of an image and this can be used to create new experiences like adding digital objects and effects to the real world. Facebook believes that AI belongs to everyone, that’s why they’ve created the Camera Effects Platform, as well as open sourcing Caffe2, which is their framework to build and run AI algorithms on a phone.
Facebook is also building partnerships with the likes of Amazon, Intel, Microsoft, NVIDIA and Qualcomm, to bring their AI technology to more people.
Surround 360 Family
Facebook has introduced some new camera designs with their Surround 360 technology, that allows people to produce high quality videos for VR. The x24 and x6 cameras designs will allow people to create more immersive and engaging content. The new camera designs have six degrees of freedom, to help bring the feeling of immersion and depth to a whole new level.
360 Artificial Intelligence
Facebook is also working on a series of techniques that improve the effective resolution of 360 videos. These techniques include gravitational view prediction, content-dependent streaming technology for non-VR devices and AI view prediction.
360 Capture SDK
Facebook also announced a 360 Capture SDK, which would allow users to seamlessly create and share virtual reality experiences. The SDK uses cube mapping instead of stitching, to create a seamless view.
We already known, that Facebook is working on some augmented reality stuff with their AR studio and their Camera Effects Platform. But at today’s keynote, Oculus VR Chief Scientist Michael Abrash, explained Facebook’s path to full AR to the point where it enhances your vision and hearing seamlessly while also being light, comfortable, power-efficient and socially acceptable in the real world.
Facebook says that the set of technologies need to reach full AR doesn’t exist yet. And they’ll be working towards that end goal of full AR for the next 10 years or so.
Building 8 is Facebook’s product development and research team. They’re working on a system that allows people to type with their brains, with a goal of a silent speech system capable of typing 100 word per minute.
The team is also working on a project that would allow people to hear with their skin.
Facebook has introduced a new building-block strategy to help connect people together. Facebook has also reached a new milestone in their efforts to reach people who were otherwise unconnected.
They also introduced Tether-tenna, which is a new type of infrastructure that uses a small helicopter tethered to a wire with fiber and power. The wire can easily be deployed to help bring back connectivity in case of emergency.
