Samsung’s Bixby voice assistant will make its debut in the Galaxy S8

There’s not shortage of voice assistants on smartphones nowadays. There’s Siri, the Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Cortana but Samsung will be joining the voice assistant game with Bixby.

Bixby or Viv as it was formerly known as, was developed by the same team behind Siri but it’s much more advanced. Bixby was designed to make interacting with your Samsung device much easier and faster.

You’ll still be able to ask Bixby all the usual questions like how far is the moon or what’s the weather. But instead, Bixby can connect to certain apps on your phone and the things that your apps offer. All the functions that could be accessed via tapping through the app, can be access via your voice. For example, you could share a photo or video via the built-in gallery or navigate the web, all without setting your finger on the screen.

But the key thing to make this all work, will be app support. Bixby will first launch on the Galaxy S8 with support for several pre-installed apps (most likely Samsung ones). Samsung says they will release an API for third-party developers to add Bixby support.

The Galaxy S8 (& its variants) will be the first Bixby device. There will reportedly be  dedicated button to activate Bixby on the side of the S8. Even though Bixby is first launching on the Galaxy S8, it will probably make its way to other Samsung devices, especially since Bixby is entirely cloud-based, so it theoretically work with smart home hubs, smart appliances and TVs.

The Galaxy S8 will be announced at a launch event on March 29th at 11am EDT and there will be a livestream here.
